Common dishwasher problems
What each problem usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.
Dishwasher not draining
Water left in the bottom usually means a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or a failed drain pump. If the dishwasher drains through a new garbage disposal, the disposal’s knockout plug may still be in place.
Check first: Clean the filter under the bottom rack. Run the garbage disposal before you start the dishwasher.
Dishes not getting clean
A dirty filter, blocked spray arm holes, water that isn’t hot enough, or a weak wash pump can all leave dishes dirty.
Check first: Clean the filter and the spray arms. Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before you start a cycle.
Dishwasher leaking
Leaks at the door often come from a worn door seal, or from using dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent. Leaks underneath often come from the fill valve, a pump seal or a hose.
Check first: Use dishwasher detergent only. Check the door seal for food or cracks.
Dishwasher won’t start
Check that the door latches with a click and the control lock (child lock) is off. If it still won’t start, the door latch, a fuse or the control board may have failed.
Check first: Check the breaker, and the wall switch if your dishwasher runs from one.
Dishes not drying
Many newer dishwashers dry by condensation, so plastics often come out wet. If glass and metal are wet too, the heating element, the vent or the rinse aid may be the cause.
Check first: Fill the rinse aid dispenser.
Dishwasher not filling with water
The water valve under the sink may be off, the fill valve may have failed, or the float switch may be stuck.
Check first: Check the valve under the sink is open. Make sure nothing is holding up the float, the small dome at the front of the tub.

Good to know in Salt Lake County
From outside sources, not Dash's own jobs.
Is the water equally hard across Salt Lake County?
No. It depends on who supplies your water, where that water comes from and the time of year. Salt Lake City Public Utilities says most of its water starts in mountain streams. In summer it adds water from deep wells, and that well water is “harder,” with more minerals. Ask your water supplier how hard your water is. If your dishwasher has a water hardness setting, your manual shows how to set it.

Repair or replace your dishwasher?
Consumer Reports says its data usually leans toward replacing a dishwasher. Dishwashers lose value fast, and a repair can cost more than you might expect.
An older rule of thumb from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than half the price of a new appliance repairing an old one.

This is outside guidance, not data from Dash's own jobs. Ask for the repair price, then compare it with the price of a new dishwasher you would actually buy.
Questions to ask the technician
- Is it a clog in the filter or drain hose, or a failed part like the pump?
- What will the whole repair cost?
- Could the maker’s warranty or a recall cover it?
From a customer
We had a dishwasher heating unit replaced. Service was great and friendly. Our dishwasher is now working like new.

Is it normal to have water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
It can be. GE says one to two cups of clean water can be normal on its models without an Ultra Fine filter. On its models with that filter, GE says water in the filter area is normal, but it shouldn’t cover the tub floor.

Can I use dish soap in my dishwasher?
No. Dish soap makes suds that can spill out onto the floor. Use dishwasher detergent only.
