My South Jordan townhome’s dryer is in a closet. What does it need?
Room to breathe. GE says a dryer in a closet needs at least an inch above it, and older models an inch in front and behind too. A closet with no way for air to get in and out when the door is shut needs venting, and GE suggests simply taking the door off. Don’t pile laundry on the floor in front, because the dryer pulls its air in along the bottom front. Starved of air, a dryer runs hot and takes longer, and GE says venting problems aren’t covered by its warranty.

Our washer is upstairs. How do we keep a leak off the ceiling below?
Put it in a floor tray. GE sells plastic washer trays that catch leaks and overflow. It calls them ideal for second-floor installations, and they come with a connector so the tray can drain to a floor drain. Then check the drain hose. On its top-loaders, GE says the hose must empty at least 30 inches above the washer’s base. If the drain is lower, use the anti-siphon clip that came with the washer to lift the hose. On its full-size front-loaders, GE’s minimum is 24 inches above the base. The pipe the hose drains into, called a standpipe, must be at least 1-1/2 inches wide inside, and open to the air. Check your own model’s installation guide too.

Will South Jordan pick up an old appliance from my curb?
Yes, for $15. The city’s Special Garbage Pick-Up takes one or two large items that weekly garbage won’t, such as couches or appliances. Book it through the city’s Connect website, and pay when you schedule. Owners can book it for their renters. If you’d rather haul it yourself, Trans-Jordan’s landfill is right in South Jordan; it adds $20 per fridge or freezer, on top of the load fee, to drain the refrigerant.
