Common refrigerator problems
What each problem usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.
Fridge not cooling, but the freezer is cold
In most fridges, the cold air in the fridge section comes from the freezer. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm, the fan that moves that air may have stopped, frost may be blocking the air path, or the air damper may be stuck shut.
Check first: Make sure food isn’t blocking the vents inside, and that the temperature setting wasn’t bumped.
Fridge and freezer both warm
When both sections are warm, the fault is usually in the cooling parts under or behind the fridge. That can be the condenser fan, dirty condenser coils, the compressor’s start relay or a control board. It can also be a freezer coil iced over because the defrost system failed.
Check first: Check the fridge has power and the inside light comes on. Listen for a hum from the back.
Water leaking under the fridge
A blocked defrost drain can send water onto the floor or into the bottom of the fridge. A cracked drain pan or a leak in the water line to the ice maker or dispenser can do the same.
Check first: If water keeps pooling, turn off the water valve that feeds the fridge and dry the floor so no one slips.
Fridge making loud noises
Clicking, buzzing, rattling or grinding usually comes from a fan motor, the compressor or its start relay, or ice rubbing on a fan blade.
Check first: Check the fridge is level and isn’t touching the wall or the cabinets.
Frost building up in the freezer
A frost-free freezer melts its own frost on a timer. Thick frost on the back wall usually means part of that defrost system has failed. Frost near the door usually means the door seal isn’t closing tight.
Check first: Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the seal needs cleaning or may need replacing.
Fridge runs all the time
Many newer fridges run almost all the time at low speed, which is normal. If yours used to cycle off and now never does, it may have dirty condenser coils, a leaking door seal, or a fan or temperature control that is failing.
Check first: Keep the doors closed while it catches up, and check that both door seals close tight.
Fridge too cold or freezing food
Food freezing in the fridge usually points to a temperature sensor, an air damper stuck open, or the setting itself.
Check first: Check the setting first. Move food away from the cold-air vent at the back.
Ice maker not making ice
An ice maker needs a cold freezer and a steady flow of water. When it stops making ice, there are four common causes. The water line may be frozen or kinked. The water filter may be clogged. The water inlet valve, the part that lets water in, may have failed. Or the ice maker itself may have failed.
Check first: Make sure the ice maker is switched on (on many models the wire arm must be down) and the water valve to the fridge is open. If the water filter is overdue, replace it.

Will a fridge work in a cold garage?
A standard fridge may not. Whirlpool’s manual says its fridge is made for a room between 55 °F and 110 °F. Whirlpool also says cold can make the freezer partly thaw. GE advises against a standard fridge anywhere below 60 °F. At Salt Lake City’s airport, the average January high is 38.6 °F and the average low is 24.2 °F. So an unheated garage can fall below those limits. Even GE’s garage-ready top-freezer fridges are rated only down to 38 °F, so check how cold your garage gets first.

Repair or replace your fridge?
Consumer Reports says a fridge less than 10 years old is usually worth fixing. The exceptions it names are budget top-freezer and side-by-side models close to 10 years old.
An older rule of thumb from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than half the price of a new appliance repairing an old one.

Questions to ask the technician
- Is it the compressor, or a smaller part like a door seal?
- Is it the ice maker itself, or the valve or line that feeds it water?
- What will the whole repair cost?
- Could the maker’s warranty or a recall cover it?
From a customer
Our technician was very knowledgeable and helpful. He answered many questions we had about our refrigerator and helped us decide what the best course of action was. He also noticed a cosmetic issue with our dishwasher as he was on his way out and fixed that too!

What should I do with my food while the fridge is warm?
Put a thermometer in the fridge. FoodSafety.gov says to throw out perishable food such as meat, fish, eggs and leftovers that has been at 40 °F or above for more than 2 hours. Move food that must stay cold into a cooler with ice, and keep the doors closed. For power outages, FoodSafety.gov says a closed fridge keeps food safe for up to 4 hours. It says a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours (24 if it’s half full) if the door stays closed.

Should I unplug a fridge that isn’t cooling?
Only if it smells of burning, sparks or trips the breaker. Otherwise leave it running with the doors closed, so it keeps what cold it has.
