Common ice maker problems

What each one usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.

Ice maker not making ice

Often the water isn’t getting to it. The filter may be clogged, the water valve may be shut or worn out, or the water line may be frozen or kinked. It can also be the ice maker itself, or a freezer that isn’t cold enough.

Check first: Make sure the ice maker is switched on and its arm isn’t raised to the off spot. Then check that food in the freezer is frozen hard.

Small, hollow or few ice cubes

Too little water is the usual cause. An old filter, a kinked line or low water pressure can slow the flow. The valve that lets water in can also wear out.

Check first: Find out when the water filter was last changed. If it’s due, change it and give the ice maker a day to catch up.

Ice maker leaking water

Water can leak from a loose or cracked water line, or from a valve that won’t close. If the tube that fills the ice maker freezes shut, the water can spill over. Look for water under the fridge or ice stuck to the bin.

Check first: Look behind the fridge for drips at the water line. If water is on the floor, turn off the valve that feeds the fridge.

Ice stuck together in the bin

Cubes freeze into a clump when the bin sits unused for a while or the freezer door is left open. A clump can block the dispenser and stop the ice maker.

Check first: Empty the bin, break up the clump and throw the old ice away. If it clumps again within a few days, have it looked at.

Ice dispenser not working

If the bin fills but no ice comes out, the trouble is usually in the dispenser. The chute may be jammed, the door flap stuck, or the switch or motor worn out.

Check first: Make sure the dispenser isn’t locked. Many fridges have a lock button. Then check that ice isn’t packed in the chute.

Good to know

How often should the fridge water filter be changed?

Whirlpool recommends replacing its filter every 6 months, when the filter light comes on, or as needed. It says a clogged filter can cut the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser, which means less ice and a slower dispenser.

What are the white flakes in my ice?

Usually minerals from your water. Whirlpool says white bits in melting ice are minerals, usually calcium carbonate, and are normal where water is hard. It also advises against hooking an ice maker up to softened water, since the salt can damage its parts.
