Common dryer problems

What each problem usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.

Dryer not heating

A blown thermal fuse can stop the heat on any dryer. It’s a safety part that blows if the dryer overheats, and a blocked vent can make it overheat. On an electric dryer, a burned-out heating element or a failed thermostat can also stop the heat. On a gas dryer, the igniter lights the gas. If it fails, the gas won’t light. A broken flame sensor or a failed gas valve coil can also stop the heat.

Check first: If an electric dryer’s double breaker has tripped or failed on one side, the drum can turn with no heat. Switch the breaker fully off, then back on.

Why an electric dryer won’t heat, and what to check first

Dryer won’t start

Check the power and that the door shuts all the way. A blown thermal fuse, a broken door switch or a failed start switch can each stop a dryer from starting.

Check first: Check the breaker and make sure the control lock isn’t on.

Dryer takes too long to dry

This is usually an airflow problem: a full lint screen or a blocked vent duct. It can also be a heating problem.

Check first: Clean the lint screen before every load. With the dryer running, check that air is blowing out of the vent outside.

Dryer making noise

Squeaking, thumping or scraping usually comes from worn drum rollers, the idler pulley, the belt or the drum glides.

Check first: Check pockets and the drum for coins or other small things.

Drum won’t turn

If the motor runs but the drum doesn’t turn, the drive belt has probably broken. If the motor only hums and nothing turns, the drum or the motor may be jammed or failing.

Check first: Turn it off so the motor doesn’t overheat, and don’t run it again until it’s checked.

Dryer shuts off too soon

A dirty or faulty moisture sensor or a failing thermostat can end the cycle early. So can overheating from a blocked vent.

Check first: Wipe the metal sensor bars inside the drum with a little rubbing alcohol.

What most often leads to dryer fires?

In U.S. Fire Administration data from 2008 to 2010, “failure to clean” was the leading factor behind dryer fires, in 34 percent of them. The data covers homes and other residential buildings. Dust, fiber and lint were what most often caught fire first.

Repair or replace your dryer?

Consumer Reports says pricier dryers stay worth fixing for longer, because a typical repair is a smaller share of what the dryer is worth.

How long it lasts: a decade or so, according to Consumer Reports.

An older rule of thumb from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than half the price of a new appliance repairing an old one.

Questions to ask the technician

  • If the thermal fuse blew, is the vent blocked too?
  • What will the whole repair cost?
  • Could the maker’s warranty or a recall cover it?

Dryer repair questions

Is it safe to use a dryer that smells hot?

No. Turn it off and switch off its breaker. A burning smell can mean lint has built up near the heater, which is a fire risk.

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Lint catches fire easily, and a blocked vent traps heat. Clean the lint screen every load, and check that air blows out of the vent outside while the dryer runs.
