Why is my electric dryer not heating?
Written by Dash Appliance Service. Updated .
Start with the dryer’s setting and the breaker labeled for the dryer. Whirlpool lists a failed heating element or a blown thermal fuse as other possible causes, and says both mean taking the dryer apart. GE says an electric dryer can also run without enough power to heat. If the dryer heats but takes longer than usual to dry, Whirlpool says a vent issue or restricted airflow is the likely cause.

Is your dryer heating at all?
First, a safety check. If the dryer smells like burning, or the outside is too hot to touch, turn it off and switch off its breaker. Don’t use it until it’s checked.
Whirlpool gives a five-minute test. Pick a heated timed cycle and run the dryer empty for 5 minutes. Then open the door and feel inside. If it feels warm, the dryer is making heat. Whirlpool says slow drying is then likely a vent or airflow problem. GE says the size of the load and how wet the clothes are affect drying time too.

What stops an electric dryer from heating?
GE lists the cycle setting and a partly tripped breaker among the checks for an electric dryer that runs without heat. Whirlpool also names a failed heating element or a blown thermal fuse as possible causes. It says a blocked vent isn’t always why a dryer won’t heat, but it’s a common reason clothes don’t dry fully. A sign can have more than one cause, so the table below is a guide, not a diagnosis.
| What you notice | One possible cause | Source |
|---|---|---|
| No heat on one setting, but heat on others | An air-only, fluff or cool-down setting | Whirlpool, GE |
| The drum turns, but no setting heats | The dryer’s breaker is tripped or partly tripped | Whirlpool, GE |
| Still no heat after the breaker reset | A failed part inside, such as the heating element or thermal fuse, or a power problem. A technician has to find which. | Whirlpool, GE |
| It heats, but a load takes more than one cycle to dry | A blocked or restricted vent | Whirlpool |
| The sides and bottom of the dryer feel very warm | A blocked vent keeping the heat inside | Whirlpool |
| Little lint on the lint screen, or lint around the door | Weak airflow from a blocked vent | Whirlpool |
| Big or soaking-wet loads come out damp | Too much in the drum, or clothes too wet going in | Whirlpool, GE |

What can you safely check first?
The setting, the breaker, the lint screen and the vent. None of these checks means opening the dryer. Where a step comes from a maker’s help page, it names the maker. The rest is our own safety advice.
- Pick a heated cycle. Whirlpool says air-only and air-fluff settings add no heat, and GE says to use a dry cycle, not fluff or cool-down.
- Check the breaker labeled for the dryer. GE says a breaker can be partly tripped even when it doesn’t look it, and a dryer on partial power can run without heating.
- Turn the dryer off. If there’s no burning smell or unusual heat, reset its breaker once: switch it fully off, then back on, as GE suggests. If it trips again, leave it off and stop using the dryer until it’s checked.
- Run the five-minute test again.
- GE says to unplug the dryer before any cleaning or maintenance. Then clean the lint screen. Whirlpool says to clean it after each use, and suggests washing it every six months with a nylon brush, hot water and liquid detergent. It says to rinse it well and let it dry fully.
- Check the vent hose behind the dryer for crushing or kinks. Move the dryer only if you can do it safely, without straining its cord or the vent.
- Put the dryer back with the vent hose connected and free of kinks, then plug it back in. Outside, GE says to make sure the vent’s wall cap or damper, the flap, opens easily. Check it while the dryer runs, and skip this if you can’t reach the vent outlet safely. Whirlpool says birds and rodents sometimes nest in dryer vents.
- GE says to dry one washer load at a time. Whirlpool says to fill the drum no more than about three-quarters full, and to spin soaking-wet clothes in the washer first.

How often should the dryer vent be cleaned?
Whirlpool says every one to two years, or sooner if drying slows down. GE says at least once a year. GE recommends a solid metal vent pipe, 4 inches wide. It advises against white plastic vent hose, which can collapse and trap lint inside the dryer. GE says that lint can make the heaters fail early.

When should you call for a repair?
Call if the dryer still won’t heat on a heated cycle after these checks, if the breaker trips again, or if it smells like burning.
Whirlpool says checking or replacing the heating element or the thermal fuse means taking the dryer apart. It says the thermal fuse is a one-time safety part: it goes off when the dryer gets too hot, and it must be replaced before the dryer is used again. Whirlpool also warns that lint or other blockages in the vent can be a fire hazard.
