Common oven and range problems

What each problem usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.

Oven not heating

On an electric oven, a burned-out bake or broil element is a common cause, and you can often see a break or a blister on it. Most gas ovens light the gas with an igniter. If the burners on top work but the oven won’t heat, the igniter may be dirty or faulty. On either kind, a failed temperature sensor or control board can also stop the oven heating.

Check first: With an electric oven off and cool, look at the bake element (bottom) and broil element (top) for breaks or bubbles.

Burner not heating

On a coil cooktop, the burner, its socket or its switch may have failed. On a glass cooktop, the element under the glass or its switch may have failed. Most gas ranges light each burner with a spark, which makes the clicking sound. If it clicks but won’t light, the burner cap may be out of place. Or the burner may be wet or clogged after a spill or a clean. If it won’t click, or still won’t light once it’s clean and dry, a part may have failed. It could be the igniter, its switch or the spark module, which powers the spark.

Check first: On a coil cooktop, with everything off and cool, swap the dead burner with a working one of the same size. If it heats in the other spot, the socket or switch is the problem. If a socket looks burned or melted, stop.

Oven temperature is wrong

If food burns or stays raw in the middle, the temperature sensor may be failing. Many ovens also let you adjust the temperature by a few degrees in the settings.

Check first: Check your manual for the temperature adjustment setting.

Oven or range won’t turn on

A blank display can mean a failed control board or a problem with the power supply to it. Electric ranges use a double breaker, so check that first.

Check first: Check the breaker. Make sure a delay start, timed cook or Sabbath mode isn’t set.

Oven door stuck locked after self-clean

The door stays locked until the oven cools down, which can take an hour or more. If it’s still locked after several hours, the lock motor or door switch may have failed.

Check first: Let it cool fully. Then switch the range off at the breaker for a minute and back on.

Good to know in Salt Lake County

From outside sources, not Dash's own jobs.

Is it my oven, or the altitude?

It may be the altitude. USDA says that above 3,000 feet, cooking may need changes in time, temperature or recipe. Salt Lake City’s airport sits at 4,227 feet. If a recipe has high-altitude directions, use them. If food still burns or stays raw, test the oven the way your manual says before you blame the temperature sensor.

Repair or replace your oven?

Consumer Reports says its data generally points to repairing a range, since many range repairs are simple and low in cost.

An older rule of thumb from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than half the price of a new appliance repairing an old one.

Questions to ask the technician

  • Is it an element, the igniter, the temperature sensor or the control board?
  • What will the whole repair cost?
  • Could the maker’s warranty or a recall cover it?

Oven and range repair questions

Can I still use the cooktop if the oven isn’t working?

Often yes, because the oven and the burners use separate parts. But if anything sparks or smells burnt, stop using the whole range and switch off its breaker.

Why does my oven smell when I turn it on?

A burning smell the first few minutes is often food or grease on the oven floor or an element. Smoke with no food inside, or a strong electrical smell, means turn it off at the breaker and call.
