Common washer problems

What each problem usually means, and what you can safely check before you call.

Washer won’t drain

Usually something is blocking the water: a sock in the drain pump, a clogged pump filter or a kinked drain hose. If the pump hums but no water moves, the pump itself may have failed.

Check first: Check the drain hose behind the washer isn’t kinked. Many front-loaders have a pump filter behind a small door at the bottom front. Put towels down first, because water will come out. Let hot water cool first.

Washer won’t spin

Most washers won’t spin while water is still in the tub, so a drain problem often looks like a spin problem. Other causes are a lid or door lock that won’t latch, a worn belt or a motor control fault.

Check first: Spread the load out evenly and run a drain-and-spin cycle on its own.

Washer leaking

Water under a washer often comes from a loose or cracked fill hose, the door seal on a front-loader, the drain pump or a loose hose clamp. Too much soap can also push suds out.

Check first: Look for drips on the fill hoses at the back. Use HE detergent in an HE washer, and less of it.

Washer won’t start

First check the power and that the lid or door is fully shut. If it still won’t start, the lid switch, door lock or control board may have failed.

Check first: Check the breaker, and make sure the control lock (child lock) isn’t on.

Washer shaking or moving across the floor

An uneven load is often the reason. If it shakes on every load, the washer may not be level, or its shocks, springs or suspension rods may be worn.

Check first: Check the washer sits level with all four feet on the floor.

Washer not filling with water

If both taps behind the washer are on, the small screens in the fill valve may be clogged with grit, or the fill valve may have failed.

Check first: Make sure both taps are fully open and the fill hoses aren’t kinked.

Good to know in Salt Lake County

From outside sources, not Dash's own jobs.

Can a washer sit in a cold garage?

Not if it can freeze. Whirlpool says to install and store a washer where it won’t freeze, because water left in the hoses can freeze and damage it. At Salt Lake City’s airport, the temperature drops to 32 °F or below on about 112 days a year. If your washer must sit in the cold, follow the winter steps in your manual. Whirlpool’s first step is to turn off both taps and drain the fill hoses.

Repair or replace your washer?

Consumer Reports says the choice depends on the washer’s age, what you paid for it and how hard you use it. A newer washer that cost more is more often worth fixing.

How long it lasts: close to 10 years, on average, according to Consumer Reports.

An older rule of thumb from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than half the price of a new appliance repairing an old one.

Questions to ask the technician

  • Which part failed: a hose, the pump, the door lock or the control board?
  • What will the whole repair cost?
  • Could the maker’s warranty or a recall cover it?

From a customer

  • 5-star review on Google

I needed a washer repaired. They had an appointment available the next day, thankfully I didnt have to wait forever. They quickly diagnosed the issue. I also had them clean out the dryer vent and they went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the work. I would definitely use them again.

Washer repair questions

Can I keep using my washer if it leaks?

Not until you know where the water is coming from. Turn off both taps behind the washer and dry the floor. Water left under a washer can damage the floor.

Why does my front-loader smell musty?

Water and soap left in the door seal and the pump filter start to smell. Wipe the seal dry after the last load, and leave the door open so it can air out.
