My Riverton home is about 25 years old. What should I check behind the appliances?
The water hookups. They can be as old as the house, even behind a newer appliance. Whirlpool says a washer’s fill hoses should be replaced every five years. Behind the fridge, it warns against a piercing-type or 3/16-inch saddle valve on the water line, because those cut the flow and clog more easily. It calls for a 1/4-inch valve that needs a drilled hole, one that meets local plumbing code. While you’re back there, look over the fridge’s line for cracks or kinks.

Is the fridge that came with my Riverton home worth fixing?
Maybe not, if it needs a big repair. ENERGY STAR says an old fridge uses about 35% more energy than a new ENERGY STAR model, and it counts on a fridge lasting 12 years. A fridge installed new in 2001 would be about twice that age. Check its own records for when it went in. A small repair can still be worth it, so get the price of the repair and weigh it against a new fridge. If the old one ends up in the garage or basement as a spare, ENERGY STAR says a second fridge can waste $80 a year.

Can an old appliance go in Riverton’s Spring Clean Days dumpsters?
No. The city’s Spring Clean Days dumpsters take no appliances: no stoves, fridges, dryers, washers or microwaves. Take it to the Trans-Jordan Landfill instead. Riverton gives each household two free $10 landfill vouchers a year, from the utility billing window at City Hall. A load in your own car or truck starts at $15, and pulling the refrigerant from a fridge or freezer adds $20. Empty the food out first, tarp and tie down the load or the fee doubles, and bring a card, because the landfill takes no cash. Trans-Jordan is open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
