Kearns gets its water from Kearns Improvement District. The district buys 94% of it from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District and pumps the rest from six wells in Kearns. It says the winter of 2025–26 brought the least snow on record, and it is asking customers to save water. Its rules make customers keep their hoses, valves and fixtures in good repair and fix leaks promptly, at their own cost. The answers below cover catching a leak early, what happens if one isn’t fixed, and who pays when a sewer backs up.

Kearns questions

Answered from public sources, not Dash's own jobs.

Can the water district warn me when an appliance is leaking?

It can, once you sign up. Kearns Improvement District offers a free smart meter system, which it calls AMI. The district says it lets you watch your water use in real time, and it will notify you of high usage or leaks. An alert while no one is using water points to a leak somewhere. Appliances are worth checking first: the water line behind the fridge, the washer’s fill hoses and the floor under the dishwasher.

What if a washer hose or ice maker line leaks and I can’t fix it right away?

Stop the water to that appliance, then get it fixed soon. Kearns Improvement District’s rules make customers keep hoses, valves and fixtures in good condition. If the district finds a broken fixture and it isn’t fixed promptly, it can shut off your water until it is. You then pay a reconnection fee to have it turned back on. For a bad leak, the rules do let residents turn off the water at the meter to make repairs.

If the sewer backs up into my laundry room, will the district pay?

Usually not. Kearns Improvement District’s rules say cleanup and damage from a sewer backup are usually the property owner’s responsibility. That holds even when the blockage is in the public sewer main. The district or its insurer covers the cleanup only if the district was negligent and that caused the damage. The sewer line from your house to the main is yours to maintain, too. So check your home insurance now. The Utah Insurance Department lists sewer backup as a typical exclusion, and coverage for it costs extra.
