How we serve Emigration Canyon

Dash repairs appliances all over Emigration Canyon. That means the homes along the main canyon road, and up in Pinecrest, Killyons and Emigration Oaks. Your technician pins down the fault and gives you one flat price. Nothing is fixed until you say so. We're family owned and operated. We service most major brands, like Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire and Maytag.

Emigration Canyon has no sewer. Its 2022 General Plan says homes there must have their own septic tank and drain field, and that a canyon-wide sewer is unlikely ever to be built. So whatever your washer and dishwasher drain goes into your own system. The plan even calls for teaching residents the benefits of water-efficient appliances. The canyon’s water district also says its water’s hardness depends greatly on which well it comes from. The answers below deal with each.

Emigration Canyon questions

Answered from public sources, not Dash's own jobs.

We’re on a septic system. How should we do laundry?

Spread it out over the week. The EPA says doing all your laundry in one day can harm a septic system. The tank doesn’t get enough time to treat the waste, and the drainfield can flood. Match the load size to the laundry, too, since a small load on a large setting wastes water. If your washer can’t pick a size, run only full loads. And when you replace it, look for the ENERGY STAR label. The EPA says those washers use 50% less water than standard models.

What shouldn’t go down the kitchen drain when we’re on septic?

Grease, and less food than you’d think. The EPA says everything that goes down a drain ends up in your septic system. Never pour cooking oil or grease down the sink. The EPA also advises cutting out the garbage disposal, or using it less. It sends fats, grease and solids into the tank that can clog the drainfield. If you keep using one, the tank will need pumping more often. So scrape plates into the trash before they go in the dishwasher.

Our water is very hard. How much dishwasher detergent should we use?

It depends on how hard your water is, and whether you soften it. The Emigration Canyon Improvement District lists its main well’s hardness as 22 and another well’s as 43. It labels both “grains or ppm,” so ask the district for a reading in grains per gallon. GE calls anything over 12 grains per gallon very hard. For that, it says to fill both detergent cups if you use powder or liquid. If you add a softener, the district suggests setting it to 30 to 35 grains. Then GE says to cut your dishwasher and washer detergent in half. Too much in softened water can etch glasses for good, and make the washer oversuds. On a private well, have your own water tested. The district’s numbers are for its wells only.
