Millcreek is a new city full of older homes. It only became a city in 2016, but its big growth came from the mid-1930s to the 1960s, in starter-home subdivisions. Today 36% of its homes date from the 1950s and ’60s. That’s more than twice the share across Salt Lake County. If a home still has its original sewer pipe out to the street, that pipe is more than 50 years old. Two of the questions below deal with that pipe and your washer.

Millcreek questions

Answered from public sources, not Dash's own jobs.

Water backs up out of the drain when my washer empties. Is the washer broken?

Maybe not. For its washers, Whirlpool says the sink or drainpipe has to carry away at least 17 gallons of water a minute. Water can back up from one that’s clogged or slow. If other drains in the house are slow too, look past the washer. The pipe from a home to the sewer main is called a lateral. Mt. Olympus Improvement District, Millcreek’s sewer district, says the lateral belongs to the property owner. It names roots, low spots, failing pipe and grease as the main problems laterals have.

A sewer backup flooded my basement laundry. Who pays for the washer and dryer?

It depends on where the backup started. If it started in your own lateral, Mt. Olympus Improvement District says cleanup and repairs fall to the owner. If the district finds it came from its own sewer lines, its no-fault claims program can help pay for cleanup. The district’s policy says major appliances that can’t be restored will be replaced with new ones of the same kind. Tell the district as soon as you find the backup, and apply in writing within 30 days.

Will Millcreek’s garbage service haul away an old fridge?

Yes, if you ask and pay a fee. Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District collects Millcreek’s garbage, and it picks up bulky items from the curb by request. Its April 2026 fee schedule lists $20 for the pickup, plus $25 per appliance with Freon, like a fridge or freezer, or $10 for one without. It may not come the day you ask. Don’t put a Freon appliance in one of the district’s seasonal containers, though. It charges $50 for each one it finds.
