South Salt Lake questions

Our new place came with its appliances. Could one be under a recall?

It’s worth a look, even for old ones. GE’s recall page still lists dishwashers made from 1983 to 1989. First find each appliance’s model and serial number on its label. On those GE dishwashers, the label is on the inside edge of the tub. Then search the model on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall site, and on the maker’s own recall page. The commission will also email you new recalls if you sign up. If you rent and find one, tell your landlord.

We moved our front-load washer ourselves. What do we do before the first load?

If its shipping bolts went back in for the move, take them out first. They’re the bolts in the back that hold the drum still on the road. Whirlpool says a washer that still has them won’t run and will shake hard. It adds that running it that way can damage it and void the warranty. Next, level it, which Whirlpool says keeps the shaking and noise down. Before the hoses go back on, Whirlpool says to flush the water pipes and hoses. It says debris in the water can clog the washer’s inlet screens, where the water comes in. That matters here if South Salt Lake City supplies your water. Most of the city’s water system went in during the 1940s and 1950s. The city says repairing or replacing those old lines stirs up sediment. If sediment shows up, it suggests running your highest-flowing tap, like the bathtub, for about 20 minutes. The city’s water page has a map that shows your water provider. Hook up the hoses, turn the water on and check for leaks. Then run a short cycle before a full load. Moving it again? Whirlpool says to move it upright, with new shipping bolts, and recommends a technician put them in. GE’s moving steps also say to drain the pump by taking out its filter.

How do I get rid of an old appliance in South Salt Lake?

Through the city, if it collects your garbage. It does for single-family homes and duplexes only. Its free cleanup comes each May and November, on a day set by your usual trash day. The city posts the dates on its cleanup page. Items must reach the curb by 6:30 a.m. that day, and can go out up to a week before. A fridge or freezer needs its Freon, the gas that cools it, taken out, with the paperwork attached. The cleanup’s rules also limit each item to 5 feet long and 75 pounds, and the crew can refuse anything bigger. So check your appliance’s weight first. The city also rents its garbage customers a 13-cubic-yard dumpster for $50, and it takes appliances without Freon.
